Record of 800,000 Persian articles on Wikipedia
The free Wikipedia encyclopedia was launched on January 15, 2001, based on the collective wisdom of the authors, based on blockchain technology and the use of open source capabilities. About a year later, after it was announced that commercial advertising would not be included in the encyclopedia, its scope was changed from .com to .org.
Less than three years later, on December 19, 2003, Persian Wikipedia was born at Sharif University of Technology with the efforts of a number of interested students exploring new technologies. After a year, the number of articles in this encyclopedia reached one thousand.
Also, in February 2005, 10,000 articles were registered in Wikinews, and since then, this increasing trend has continued; So that at the beginning of June this year, we witnessed the registration of 800,000 Persian articles in this online encyclopedia. At the same time last year, about 720,000 articles were registered in Persian Wikipedia, which has now grown by about 12%.
Ranked 19 in the world
Wikipedia is programmed in such a way that almost all languages can have a site dedicated to that language using a dedicated address.
Mohsen Salek, who has been working as the senior director of this encyclopedia for several years, reports that 800,000 Persian articles have been registered in Persian Wikipedia until the beginning of June 1400. According to him; “With this number of articles in Persian, we are now ranked 19th in the world.”
Although the Arabic Wikipedia is ranked 18th, it should be noted that the world’s Arabic-speaking population is about 300 million. According to the latest statistics, the total number of Persian-speaking people in the world is more than 110 million.
. Also, the number of countries whose official language is Arabic is not comparable to the countries in which Persian is accepted as an official language. Meanwhile, Salek evaluates the position of Persian Wikipedia among competitors in the region such as Turkey and other Turkic-speaking countries and says that we are in a better position.
Large participatory project
Because Wikipedia can’t make money from advertising and has no sponsorship, everything is done voluntarily. The senior director of this free Persian-language encyclopedia, noting that Persian Wikipedia is one of the few large projects in the country that volunteers manage and expand without any financial incentive, emphasizes: “Persian Wikipedia has no financial income and everything is done voluntarily and “It is done by enthusiasts from different fields.”
“Unfortunately, in our country, the culture of voluntary work has not been established in such a way that a culture must be created in order to spread it,” Salek believes. However, he points out that “perhaps one of the main reasons for this is the poor economic situation of the people; in fact, one cannot expect voluntary work from a society with more important concerns.”
Corona dual effect
It seems that the outbreak of coronavirus in the country has had a dual effect on the activities of Persian Wikipedia; “This has slowed the growth of Persian Wikipedia, as most of our meetings and programs encourage students and faculty to participate in the project in person,” he said. It was held in universities and scientific communities.
“Of course, the outbreak of the Corona virus did not stop the Persian Wikipedia, and we tried to continue this path by holding online training sessions.” “Those who used to work with us, and who were actually Wikipedia veterans, spent more time spreading and growing this encyclopedia with the outbreak of the Corona virus,” he said. “They had more opportunities to sit at the computer and use the online space to participate.”
